Moving house in Dar es Salaam: a practical packing plan

In short

Start packing two weeks ahead with things you rarely use, book your transport and helpers early, pack an essentials bag for the first night, and unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first. Kazzzi can pack, unpack and arrange furniture; transport is arranged separately.

Moving house in Dar es Salaam: a practical packing plan

Two weeks before

  • Book your transport (a truck or pickup) and, if you'd like help, book packing on Kazzzi for a scheduled date.
  • Collect boxes, bags, tape and a marker.
  • Sort what you're taking, giving away or throwing out — moving less saves time.
  • Start packing books, decorations and clothes you won't need for a while.

The last week

  • Pack room by room, and label every box with the room it's going to.
  • Wrap plates and glasses in cloth or paper and mark those boxes "fragile".
  • Take photos of how electronics are connected before unplugging them.
  • Tell your landlord, and arrange water and electricity (LUKU) at the new place.

Moving day

  • Keep an essentials bag with you: documents, chargers, medicine, a change of clothes and toiletries.
  • Load heavy furniture first and fragile boxes last.
  • Check every room, cupboard and the compound before you leave.

Settling in

Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first so you can eat and sleep comfortably, then work through the rest. Kazzzi's unpacking and furniture-arranging services can do this with you.
